Explore faith, persecution, and immigration through literature and history.

The Teacher Resource for Thrown to the Wind helps students ages 9–12 deepen their understanding of the novel while exploring the religious conflicts and immigration experiences of the 17th century. Designed for classroom and homeschool use, this companion resource connects an adventure based on true family history with thoughtful discussion, source analysis, and engaging activities.

Students investigate the historical circumstances behind Etienne’s journey, examining how religious persecution, competing beliefs, and the search for a new home shaped people’s lives. Through primary and secondary source readings, cross-curricular activities, projects, and simulations, they consider different perspectives and connect the characters’ experiences with the wider historical world.

Ready-made lessons help students:

  • Analyze literature alongside historical documents.
  • Evaluate primary and secondary sources.
  • Identify point of view and consider multiple perspectives.
  • Support interpretations with evidence.
  • Strengthen critical thinking through discussion and hands-on learning.

Developed by author and longtime social studies teacher Amanda M. Cetas, in partnership with writer, story consultant, and former English teacher Adriana R. King, this resource includes lessons aligned with national standards, additional teaching ideas, and grading rubrics.

Bring the world of Thrown to the Wind into your classroom—and encourage students to read closely, question thoughtfully, and explore the challenges faced by families seeking a new beginning.

Meet the Author

Amanda Cetas is the author of the historical adventure seriesA Country for Castoffs, which combines her family history with the larger historical context to educate and entertain a new generation of readers. She has researched her family genealogy for decades and taught history for fourteen years. She loves the Sonoran Desert’s fragile beauty where she lives most of the year. She is inspired by the forested mountains of Northern Arizona and the ever-changing Sea of Cortez, where she has watched her three children grow up over the years, and now enjoys watching her grandchildren making new discoveries for themselves!
