Three historical adventures. A world of discovery.
The A Country for Castoffs Teacher Resource Bundle brings together the companion teaching guides for Thrown to the Wind, A Home in the Wilderness, and At the Mercy of the Sea. Designed for classroom and homeschool use, these resources connect literature with 17th-century history through thoughtful discussion, source analysis, and engaging activities.
Follow Etienne’s journey from religious persecution in Europe to the challenges of colonial North America and the dangers of life at sea. Each guide opens a different window into his world:
-
Thrown to the Wind explores religious conflict, persecution, and immigration as families seek safety and a new beginning.
-
A Home in the Wilderness examines Eastern Woodland Native American nations and their complex relationships with Dutch, English, and French settlers.
-
At the Mercy of the Sea investigates maritime life, trade, piracy, and the conflicts that shaped the Atlantic world.
Through primary and secondary source readings, cross-curricular activities, projects, and simulations, students learn to analyze literature, evaluate historical evidence, identify point of view, and consider events from multiple perspectives.
Developed by author and longtime social studies teacher Amanda M. Cetas, in partnership with writer, story consultant, and former English teacher Adriana R. King, these resources provide ready-made lessons aligned with national standards, additional teaching ideas, and grading rubrics. The guides offer progressively challenging learning opportunities as students move through the novels.
Bring all three adventures into your classroom—and help students become thoughtful readers, curious historians, and confident critical thinkers.
This bundle includes three teacher resources. Companion novels are sold separately.
